Fuelled For Life

Fuelled For Life

What a brilliant Inquiry focus this was! Below are some helpful links to lesson plans that I came across. I found aspects of each to be really beneficial for my own teaching which I integrated into my planning and tailored them to meet the needs of my students. Feel free to watch Room 5's video of all their best moments during 'Fuelled for Life'.

ANZAC

The ANZAC Ceremony

 ANZAC Research

Explore the resources below to learn about A.N.Z.A.C day.

When finished create a DLO that answers the following questions.

  • What does ANZAC stand for?
  • When do we have the ANZAC ceremony?
  • Why do we celebrate ANZAC?
  • What started WW1?
  • How do we hold a commemoration on ANZAC day today?
  • Why are poppies a symbol for ANZAC day?

The room 5 students absolutely loved all the research we did in and around the history of the ANZACS and the two World Wars. It was the first time I had approached teaching a topic like this to a class this young. The students had absolutely no knowledge about anything to start with but we gradually built quite a broad understanding over a 2 week period.

Students were also asked to interview members of their family to see if any of their relatives were ever involved in a war. They also chose either a soldier or a medic each to research and then write a biography on. To finish off the topic we had one further discussion as a class where I used a lot of 'Talk Moves,' to allow them to dig deeper into what life must have been like for soldiers and their families during the war. We then discussed how their lives would be affected if another war was to occur now.
A great inquiry topic which the students handled with surprising maturity and were very invested in their learning.

Sonny Bill Williams & Julian Dennison Thank Room 5

Little did we know that we had some environmental superheroes in our own class.......

Here are some of the lovely messages of support that we received from famous Kiwis who heard about our mission to clean up the environment.......

“Te Taiao O Tamaki”- The Environment of Tamaki.

Te Taiao O Tamaki”- The Environment of Tamaki.

Learning Focus:
How do we impact the environment around us and what can we do to lessen our effect on it.

Specific Focuses:
  • How has the local area changed over the past 50 years?
  • Water Pollution
  • Air Pollution
  • Rubbish- School/Household
  • Waste Reduction School/Household
  • Reduce/Reuse/Recycle
  • Global Warming

The video below was made by Room 5 as part of our campaign to raise awareness about how we are treating our environment.

Water Pollution- Creek Visit (Week 1 & 2)

DrinkingPollutedWater.jpg
To properly see how we impacted our local environment we went on a class trip to the creek at the start of Term 1. Students were asked to closely observe their surroundings on the way.

The children found an alarming amount of rubbish both in the creek and in the areas surrounding it, most of which was making its way into our waterways. The children decided that they wanted to clean this up, so we collected it all into bags. We then sat down as a class and discussed how the items could have got there and what was likely to happen to them now. We also talked about how the creek flowed into the sea and was therefore also polluting our oceans. Here are some of the questions which were prompted by the trip:
  • How did the rubbish get into the creek?
  • How long does it take to decompose?
  • How will this affect our waterways?
  • Where does this creek flow into?
  • How does it affect the creatures that live in there?
  • How does this affect the food chain?
  • If rubbish/pollution is swallowed by the creatures that live in the water do we then end up eating it when we eat them?
  • What affect does it have on the water that we drink?

Analysing The Rubbish We Collected

We then separated all the rubbish we found into 3 different categories to analyse what was being discarded and the best way to deal with it.
The 3 categories were:

Biodegradable, Recyclable & Landfill

The questions raised were:

What sort of things are biodegradable? What rubbish can we recycle? What should go into landfill? What are the effects on the planet?

A few days later we were visited by a lady who worked at...

She gave us a more detailed understanding of the waste management process in Auckland and some helpful hints for us to employ to help the environment. This kick started our focus on......

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

The class then set recycling goals for themselves both at school and at home and started our environmental campaign by making videos and posters and educating others.

A New Year, A New Class, A New School...

A New Year, A New Class, A New School...

My First Few Weeks

I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to teach at Tamaki Primary school this year and have loved getting to know the staff and students over the first few weeks of Term 1. Having already relieved at Tamaki Primary I knew that I would enjoy the teaching environment and love the diversity of the students at our school.

In terms of my teaching focuses this year, I have 3 main areas which I want to focus on in terms of my approach to teaching. Each of these are areas of teaching that resonate with me and are what I want to improve in.

Firstly, as a teacher I want to encourage the families of my students to become more involved in their child’s learning. It is important that they take an interest in what we are doing at school and in how their child is progressing. It is my hope that I can get parents more involved in their child’s learning by taking a ‘past & present’ approach with the various inquiry topics we cover. I hope to encourage parents and whanau to share their experiences with the children of what life was like for them when they were at school.

The second area of focus for me is to incorporate 'Talk Moves,' more in my teaching. I have already witnessed how great these teaching methods are at empowering learners. I want to develop more confidence in using Talk Moves in my classroom as it makes students more engaged in the learning process.

The final goal for myself is to try to focus as much as possible on using positivity, encouragement and empathy as my core teaching tools. I believe that positivity is the greatest tool we have as teachers. Many of the children we teach have a perception that they are '"dumb," which is a huge roadblock for them when it comes to learning. There have been numerous studies that have looked at how a young learner's mindset develops. This happens very early with them forming either a negative or positive self perception as to their own level of 'intelligence.' Those who think they are not smart or good at things typically withdraw from learning and can often display negative behaviours as a result of how they feel. It is also proven that people who are from ethnic minorities are far more likely to face these sorts of challenges. We as teachers strive to break down these 'learning walls' that children may put up within our classrooms. The only way to do this is through positive reinforcement. The focus shouldn't always be on praising children for 'intelligence,' all students develop further when the focus of praise is on their hard work and individual efforts.
The article below is fantastic and offers some great tools for teachers.

Lets see how I go with my goals in 2017...
